Three Jacksonville, Florida area stakes combined to Fill the Banks (blood and food).  Some 1,557 total volunteers donated approximately 4,011 hours during and organizing the event which collected 353 pints of blood in 4 church building sites and one blood bank site and 20,816 pounds of food and $5,602 in donations to Second Harvest, the primary distributor of the food to over 550 local food pantries and representing a total of 45,313 meals for the less fortunate.  An additional estimated 4,500 people donated food during the DOS.  Jacksonville East Stake President Thomas Spackman said of the project, “This has been an outstanding success.  We will continue to reap the blessings in years to come.”  R. Wayne Rieley, President/CEO of Lutheran Social Services (parent organization of Second Harvest of NE Florida) said, “The results of your project is great news.  Over 500 food pantries will benefit greatly from your generous Day of Service.”

Location and Time:

Blood donations at 4 area meeting houses (in Jacksonville: 1679 Dunn Ave. and 4087 Hendricks Ave.; in St. Augustine, FL: 5490 County Road 210 and at Life South donation center, Palatka, FL; in Orange Park, FL 461 Blanding Blvd.) from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 24, 2010.

Food bank contributions gathered at all 15 area meeting houses and picked up by Second Harvest trucks on April 24, 2010.

Activity/responsibility:

Fill the Banks Day of Service will involved over 1,000 volunteers representing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other area churches and organizations to fill the blood and food banks in the Jacksonville, Florida area. 
- blood donations will occur at each of 4 church buildings on Dunn Avenue in North Jacksonville, on Hendricks Avenue in South Jacksonville, on Hwy 210 in St. Augustine and in Orange Park in West Jacksonville.
- food donations will be collected by families throughout the area and brought to any of the 15 church buildings in the greater Jacksonville area for boxing and loading into trucks provided by Second Harvest which donates the food to some 550 local food banks.
- families may register for the project (and specific elements of the project) they want to participate in at a special, customized Day of Service website provided by Hands On Jacksonville at www.Handsonjacksonville.org (select corporate event with code name DOSJAX).  The website will provide families with information about each project, how to register, reminders and will monitor and report results.

Tools or skills required:

- willing blood donor
- willing blood donation site worker
- transportation to distribute door hangers encouraging blood donations and/or food bank donation collection time and date
- transportation to pick up food donations and deliver them to a local collection point at one of the 15 local church buildings
- willing food bank worker (sort, box, inventory and stack donated food items; load onto trucks, etc.)

Ages:

blood donation restricted to age 17 (with parental permission) and up; food pick-up and sorting is family friendly (any age)

Additional Notes:

The Public Affairs department of the tri-stake, along with other DOS members and partners attended 14 city, town and county meetings and were presented with proclamations/resolutions regarding the day of service in their areas.  Food donation collectors will place door hangers around neighborhood prior to Saturday, April 24 and return to pick-up food donations in the morning of Saturday, April 24.  Food donations should be taken to one of 15 buildings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the greater Jacksonville area.  Blood donors will schedule donation times at one of four local collection sites between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Saturday, April 24.
