Description of what happened:
Our Ward had a DOS committee that contacted several community organizations who agreed to partner with us for a food drive. Presentations were made at Eustis and Tavares Chambers of Commerce. We also contacted schools and other civic and religious organizations in the area. The experience at Tavares Middle School exemplifies what we were trying to achieve. The food drive at Tavares Middle School was sponsored by the Academy, which is a school within the school. The Academy caters to students who have a tactile/kinesthetic learning style. The goal was to provide a way for the students to give back to their community in a unified effort. There are 41 students enrolled in the Academy. They made signs and publicized the food drive. The homeroom with the most food items collected won breakfast for the whole class. The students collected over 600 cans of food. The winning homeroom was teacher Josh Edmundson’s. Our combined efforts resulted in ap proximately four pickup truck loads of food items for the beneficiary organizations.
Timeline:
December contacted potential beneficiary organizations to assess needs
January – March contacted potential partners and made presentations to civic organizations, finalized publicity plan
March/April publicity, encouraged members of our Ward to start contacting neighbors to invite them to join in the project.
Started collecting food the first of April.
April 24, final collection and distribution of food to beneficiary organizations.
News Worthy:
This event is news worthy because it provided a boost to two local food pantries that are working to bless the lives of families in the community.
The beneficiary organizations were Lake Cares and Altoona Food Bank. The donor organizations were Tavares middle School and the Eustis Ward
The purpose of the event was to help fight hunger in our local community.
There were no verifiable sources of the news being reported.

109 NE Crystal Street, Suite B, Crystal River, Florida 34428, Saturday, April 24, 2010; Time: TBA
Activity/responsibility:
The Lecanto Ward is organizing a beautification project including painting, landscaping irrigation, sodding, dirt fill, planting native Florida plants etc/ The Lecanto Ward volunteer army will be partnering with CHIPS representative volunteers, the Lion’s Club volunteers, the Key Center Plant Nursery, the City of Crystal River, and Citrus County Administrator Brad Thorpe to perform plant installation and beautification labor at the Lion’s Club/CHIPS location. We will assign a group of volunteers, including the youth, to plant flowers and Florida native plants per our landscape plan design on the left/west side of the CHIPS office train car. In between the train car we will be putting in a flower garden along with other Florida native plants and mulch. We will also be installing dirts to level out the middle of the west side of the CHIPS office ground to avoid runoff. We will assign a group of priesthood from the Elder’s Quorum and High Priest Group to perform pressure washing of the train car offices opposite where plants are being installed simultaneously, to begin on the East side of the CHIPS second parallel office car. We will have another group of volunteers sand the 2 wooden walkway entrances to CHIPS so they can be properly re-stained thereafter by said group. We hope to complete the work by 2 pm and then have a lunch that will be provided by donation, in coordination with CHIPS and a local ward member assignment.
Tools or skills required:
We will need 25-30 shovels, 8 wheel barrels, 2 pressure washers (as there are only 2 outdoor water hookups), and 10-15 gallons of staining for wood, electric sanders and various grains of manual sanding paper for taking off paint and prepping the wood for staining. Help for Haiti!
Name of Organization:
![]()
Location and Time:
Lake David in Groveland Park
441 South Main Avenue, Groveland, FL
It will go from 11 -3:00pm (as of right now).
Saturday, April 24, 2010
Help for Haiti will finalize on the 24th of April with a huge event held at Lake David in Groveland. We are involving the communities with the Groveland and Clermont Mayors. Proclamations will also be signed declaring the 24th a day of service to be recognized with the communities efforts. An 8 week effort will be taking place will both wards and branch for collection of goods, along with the finale on the 24th of April to celebrate the communities efforts!
Activity/responsibility:
First: Cory and Gail Carter, Brother and Sister Bori, will spearhead placing collection boxes in retail establishments. They are designing a special plastic box featuring a wood signage holder to frame the large Help Haiti poster you presented in our combined meeting on Sunday. They want this collection box to have a professional look. Publix Supermarket has requested to see the box and likely will approve it. Cory and Gail will also approach other retailers such as, TJ Max, Ross, Kohl’s, J.C. Penny and any other retailers that generate higher volume foot traffic who will allow for a collection box to be placed in their retail facility. The Carters, and their team, will monitor the boxes regularly to remove donations and make certain the receptacles remain clean, and that the posters keep a fresh look. This will be their main focus for the entire 8 weeks collections span.
Second: Sister Nickerson will be your liaison person to coordinate any PR information with Sister Parker that you would like. She and the Carters will work closely and will keep you informed of collections locations. Erica will focus on collections at schools, restaurants and other sources she has in mind. We have at least two other public school teachers in our ward that may help with this angle. Erica has excellent ideas and will be invaluable in this process.
Third: We will ask our Young Women to sew the duffel bag material into the proper sized bags as a service project. We’ll assign selected families in the ward to gather the materials needed to fill the bags. We believe that we can effectively prepare 30 duffel bags (all wards) maybe more.
Fourth: We really like the idea of the Family Home Evening Neighborhood Collection Program. We’re organizing a presentation for our ward auxiliaries and, if approved by Bishop Wilson/Jackson, we’ll implement this collection method through the High Priest Group, Elders Quorum, Relief Society and Young Men/Young Women organizations, and meet as one group the 21 of March to roll out the plan. In addition, we’ll ask the Primary to incorporate this into their Sharing Time by explaining the plight of the Haitian people and setting a date when the children can collectively bring an item to share
Fifth: Sister Hawkins and Sister Webber will be working with the local schools to have them raise canned food and clothing items for the Rose Foundation.
Sixth: Brother Rotz will work on getting a storage unit donated by a local business (Groveland) and work with Sister Dewberry on a proclamation to be signed by the mayor of Groveland and Clermont and help in the planning and organizing the event to be held at Lake David on the 24th of April.

Additional Notes:
We are also involving local businesses, and are working directly raising canned goods, clothing, shoes, and emergency kits for the Rose Foundation that is in Haiti. The Clermont, Minneola wards and the branch in Sumterville are partnering together to make this happen. A great family activity, for Family Home Evening.
