On April 22, 2010, at the regular meeting of the City Council, Mike Wiggins, Mayor, proclaimed Saturday, April 24, 2010, as Linking Arms-Helping Hands 2010 Day of Service in the City of Pensacola, and urged all citizens to join in this community Day of Service to landscape and beautify an area of the community.

Working side by side with employees of the City’s Parks & Recreation Department and volunteers for Clean & Green, an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, 194 members of all ages from the Pensacola Florida Stake planted azaleas and crepe myrtles in Estramadura Square and cleaned, replanted, and mulched the medians of 10 city blocks of Lakeview Avenue bordering the Square.  The Pensacola Florida Stake has 10 units with each unit being assigned a block-long median to beautify .  City of Pensacola employees cut the edging for the planted areas in the medians, prepared the holes for the trees in Estramdura Square, provided the azalea plants, and provided the pine-straw mulch.  With rakes, shovels, and pruning tools, Church members, Clean & Green volunteers from the Naval Aviation Technical Training Center (NATTC-Pensacola), and local residents provided the labor to clean up the medians, bag the debris, plant the shrubs, and spread the mulch.  Two members documented the activity with pictures and video.  All totaled, 224 individuals participated in the Day of Service project—194 members and 30 non-members.

Despite heavy rain the night before and the threat of rain on Saturday, members and other volunteers showed up at the scheduled time of 9:00 am for the kick-off and ceremonial planting of the first crepe myrtle tree in the Square.  Under overcast skies, all that was to be accomplished was completed by 12:00 noon as planned.  While the youth and adults worked, the younger children kept busy in the playground in the Square.  After the work was done, the members and other volunteers enjoyed a picnic of hot dogs and hamburgers grilled by priesthood members at the Square and desserts prepared by the Relief Societies.  Just as the picnic was concluding, a few sprinkles of rain were felt and shortly after the clean-up, the rain fell to water in the newly planted shrubs and trees and to settle the freshly strewn mulch.
