Running From Hunger (5K Race and Food Drive)
A total of 8828 cans of food were donated to local area food banks in Gwinnett, Rockdale, and Newton Counties
Citizens from across Gwinnett, Rockdale and Newton Counties joined the Lilburn Stake in a 5K Race and Food drive. Each unit of the Lilburn, Georgia Stake spent several weeks prior to the event to collect cans for the 6-8 food banks. These cans of food were brought to the day of the race and combined with the cans that were donated by the public and race participants. Each runner was asked to donate 10 cans each. The race took place on April 24th despite major thunderstorms and inclement weather. Although the weather may have limited the number of runners (267), we were very pleased to see the amount of food that had been collected by each of the individual units. When combined with the food collected on the day of the race it totaled 8828 cans or 4.5 tons of food. Response from the organizations served was overwhelming. The food supply in many of these food banks was at a 14 year low and this influx of food could not have come at a better time for them. The stake has been supporting these food banks for the past several years, and this only served to strengthen our relationships.
