We were able to get our group together with a group from Friends of Decatur and help to clean up the Historic section of the Decatur Cemetery in downtown Decatur, GA.  Adults and children were there in the rain to help on this project.  We pulled weeds, raked, cleaned pathways, cleaned grave stones, and fixed small trenches for better water flow.  The Friends of Decatur organization typically tries to maintain the basic upkeep of the cemetery with 6 full time members and other volunteers.  They were very happy with the amount of hard work we were able to accomplish with our group and asked us to come back any time we were able.  We were able to clear all of the walkways and clean most of the gravestones in the historic section of the cemetery.  We were able to clean up the pathway along the road and side roads.  The event was definitely a success from all aspects.

Families First is a wonderful organization that helps families in all different types of difficult situations such as stages of adoption, homelessness, teen pregnancies, single parenthood, foster care, and much more become more stable, more loving, and most importantly a stronger unit.  We as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Smyra GA area were priviledged to partner with a couple of local neighborhoods, The Retreat at Old Vinings Lake and Barnes Mill, in collecting donations for Families First.  Items such as bedding, kitchen items, towels, and crib supplies were collected and donated by many volunteers to be used by Families First in serving the families that come to them for assistance.  This was a wonderful opportunity to reach out and be reminded that Strong Families Build Strong Communities!

Community Partners: Keith Goodwin Fulton County Dentist, At&t, FEMA, Bishop's Storehouse
Organization Served: Community Action Center
Influencers: DOS Chairman was the Activities Committee Chairman, Reggie Brett and his Committee including Bishopric Counselor, Scott Lambert
Total people involved: 64
Total volunteer hours: 130 hours

Glenridge Ward had a very successful Day of Service. There were 55 volunteers at the church, and we worked with several volunteers from the CAC on different days in different ways. This was about 3 times as many as signed up or registered on the DOS website. We completed the 200 lbs of rice, 70 lbs beans and 175 toiletry kits quickly. The Bishopric asked Brother Brett if there was time to do more on the DOS, would he ask his volunteers to assist in cleaning the church.  After the delivery was made, and within about an hour, the church building was spotless.

One non-LDS sister (Harriet) received the flyer distributed by Public Affairs at the Sandy Springs Civic Roundtable and came to help.
Jon Clark, Dena Brett, Clarion and Rex Shirling delivered the finished products over to the CAC. We met Doris and her husband Eric Pereira. Doris works at the CAC as a grant writer.
With all the attendees, including those that stayed to clean the building, we contributed about 80 hours of service for the day, with 50 spent in preparation and participation by members of the committee and partners.
