Biggest Food Collection Drive of the Year at America’s Second Harvest
Name of Organization:
America’s Second Harvest Food Bank, Brunswick GA
Location and Time:
3810 Whitlock Street
Brunswick Georgia 31520

9 a.m. Saturday, 24 April 2010
Activity/responsibility:
On April 24, 2010 Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, volunteers and Partners will meet at America’s Second Harvest Food Warehouse to sort food and usable items. Last year this same project yielded over 7000 lbs of food. Throughout 2009, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and their many partners were the largest contributors of usable goods to this organization.
America’s Second Harvest is the largest volunteer food distribution center in Glynn County.
Four areas of focus will be utilized, as well as possibly finding other ways to help:
1 - Food collection bins will be placed throughout the community, including at Partner locations.
2 - Collection bags will be given to Church members to give to friends and neighbors. We ask our members to contact and encourage others to give generously.
ONE LOCAL CHURCH, COLLEGE PLACE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, TOOK ABOUT 200 BAGS TO DISTRIBUTE TO THEIR MEMBERS. AND THE SCOUTS ALSO HAVE A BAG COLLECTION EFFORT
IN PLACE
3 - On the Day of Service, specially marked bins will be placed in front of local grocery stores and will be manned with volunteers. We are also asking stores to offer some kind of promotion, such as “buy one get one free” with the intent of having/suggesting the shopper donate the free can.
4 - At the food bank there will be members and volunteers doing such service as: sorting, classifying and discarding out-of-date food items; cleaning and stocking the shelves; cleaning the food collections bins; and other projects as needed.
America’s Second Harvest will be moving into a new facility about the same time as our Day of Service, so we will also be available to help with whatever they need in that regard.
As of 3/25/2010, partners in the Day of Service are: Ameris Bank, Brunswick Kiwanis Club, Christ’s Church for the End of Times, College of Coastal Georgia, Frederica Credit Union, Georgia Power, Grace United Methodist Church, Glynn County Sheriff’s Office, Griffis Steel, IRS (Criminal Investigation), Okefenokee Area Council Boy Scouts of America, Pirates of the Spanish Main, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, United Community Bank, Winn Dixie, College Place United Methodist Church.
