On April 25th, members of the VIncennes ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, together with local citizens and the Knox county park and recreation department, did a massive clean up of Hillcrest park. They worked all morning clearing branches and debris from the park and trails surrounding the park. Volunteers cleared three trails that had sat untended for 12-18 months. Volunteers removed weeds, trees and vines from trails. Volunteers also increased the size of the trails from 3’ to 4’. The younger kids along with several members cleared a new 4’ trail leading from the restrooms to the existing trail. Spots were created on each trail for benches or Picnic tables that will be added later by the parks department. They worked to revitalize the trails and picnic areas. The trails around the park had been a spot for promiscuous activity. The parks board hopes that this clean up will stop the bad activities because there are now fewer secluded spots. They also prepared an area for a dog park, something the parks board has wanted to create for a long time and that the community needs. Neighbors were extremely grateful for the cleanup and are confident that this will put an end to the criminal activity happening near their homes.
