Birmingham, Alabama
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are often unwelcome guests when they knock at the front door wearing white dress shirts and holding a Book of Mormon.
But after a tornado, when Mormon missionaries arrive in work clothes carrying chainsaws to help clear fallen trees, they are a welcome sight. More than 4,000 volunteers for "Mormon Helping Hands" have been working in tornado-ravaged areas.

Sometimes, God speaks from the whirlwind, as he did to Job.
Other times, he speaks with a quiet knock on the door, the morning after the whirlwind has passed.
That's what happened to Iris and Susan Elkins the day after an April 16 tornado left them virtual prisoners in their Cottonade home. Mounds of storm debris and fallen pine trees left them unable to get any farther than their front porch.
But there was just enough room for Lonnie Blevins to knock. Soon, Blevins and a host of help from the Church of Latter Day Saints were swarming over the neighborhood, including the Elkins' debris-blocked ranch house.

The Church of the Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints (LDS) has arranged to host a “Fill the Blood and Food Banks — A Day of Service” on April 24, in Clay, Duval and St. John’s Counties, involving some 1,000 members and as many non-member friends and neighbors.
The mission of A Day of Service is to “link arms” with other citizens, churches, civic organizations, and government agencies to strengthen local communities with meaningful service projects that will help those in need, build friendships and bolster spirits. A Day of Service is a national effort involving the entire Southeastern United States (11 states) with over 50,000 volunteers. To meet their goals, LDS partnered with The Blood Alliance (TBA), Second Harvest North Florida, NEFARC, and Hands On to make significant contributions of blood and food.
LDS arranged for Proclamations and Resolutions for A Day of Service that were signed by several Mayors, Council Members and Boards of County Commissioners in all participating regions. TBA representatives were present at each Proclamation to thank LDS and the various county leaders for their support.
