Every week, I hunt for community events that can be duplicated in other areas, and highlight those great ideas for a neighborhood or a small area. I’m hoping that people will see an event they think fits their neighborhood and do something similar.
Of course, there is no better event than a town such as Summerville coming together to help those close to home.
On Monday, Mayor Bill Collins put his stamp on the “Summerville Cares Day of Service” projects that will happen April 21.
As of this week, more than 300 residents have signed up to work on 28 projects, including installation of a roof at Eagle Harbor Boys Ranch, painting facilities and relandscaping the Frances Willis SPCA, conducting food drives for Palmetto House and the SPCA, refinishing the theater stage at Summerville High School and landscaping the Seago Library.

The second annual Disaster & Family Preparedness Seminar, scheduled for April 17, 9 a.m. until 2:45 p.m., was on his mind when John Nolan saw a man walking dogs in his neighborhood.
"My mind leapt immediately to his taking care of his food storage," said Nolan, who is the volunteer communications coordinator for the local churches of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. "The people from The Ark will be there to talk about such things."
Hardly any aspect of disaster preparedness, including caring for one's pets in an emergency, will be left out of the free community seminar.

LDS Church hosts Running from Hunger
With hunger problems in the United States at a 14-year high, the Lilburn Georgia Stake, a group of 13 congregations of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gwinnett, Newton, and Rockdale counties, has planned an event to help restock the shelves of local food pantries. The LDS church is partnering with other community organizations to host Running from Hunger, a 5K family fun run/walk and food drive, on April 24 at Tribble Mill Park in Lawrenceville.
Before the race, local church units will also hold community food drives. In lieu of an entry free, individual participants are asked to donate 10 cans of nonperishable food items and families are asked to donate 40 cans. About 600 participants are expected for the event. All food collected will be given to local food banks for distribution directly to families in the communities who need it most.
This event is part of the second annual Day of Service in Georgia, which is the largest statewide outreach of community service to date. Georgia is one of 12 Southeastern states involved in this year’s Day of Service. The efforts are being spearheaded by local LDS congregations from Texas to Georgia and from Virginia to Florida.
