A week before the DOS, we found that the foundation needed some work before painting could begin. As soon as the work is complete the painting will start. We expect the work to take three Saturdays. The restoration of the house is a long-term project with many smaller projects to be accomplished. The museum will have artifacts taken from the original church, an arbor for worship, a genealogy lab, a tour through the cemetery, and hopefully the uncovering of the original baptismal font which is now under asphalt, and a bookstore.
We did have the Family Heritage Celebration as planned. The program included music, genealogical information and slide shows celebrating African-American religions. The children decorated family banners with their family name and the saying “Be true to who you are and the family name you bear.” (Gordon B. Hinckley) Ice cream donated by Blue Bell was served as refreshments.

Activity/responsibility:
The Mountain Island Ward will be participating in this ongoing project helping the Mt. Olive Baptist Church create an African American Museum of Church History. Teaming with the Huntersville Ward, Mt Olive Baptist, and Grace Covenant Church we will remove all clutter from the house, remove an old shed, repair the brick foundation, and strip and prep the house for painting. The following week painting will begin. The primary children are holding a “Pennies for Paint” drive with each congregation asking their children to collect coins. We will also help with online research looking for grants, researching church history, and preparing genealogies for several families at the Mt. Olive Baptist church. We will end the day with a potluck dinner, crafts, and music at the Mt. Olive Church.
