51 volunteers showed up at Lake Carlson and worked through the day to carve a walking/jogging path across the steep, treacherous and overgrown back side of Lake Carlson, where only a small, non-navigable goat path was before.  This project created a full-loop walking/jogging/nature path around the entire lake, where before one could only enjoy 2/3 of the lake by an accessible path.  With three chain saws, multiple pick axes, shovels, hoes, rakes, axes and hard, hard work, the path was slowly cut and completed.  Now the entire local military community can come out to their local recreation area and enjoy the full access to the lake.  As a direct result of this project, another group has volunteered to build two long, difficult bridges to augment the trail, leaving the recreation area director very, very grateful for a community so willing and able to bless one another through service.

Mt. Olive Cemetery is an indentured slave graveyard which is partially renovated.  The cemetery is located on a wooded knoll in Clarksville Tennessee.  Historically, indentured slaves were buried in wooden coffins which have since collapsed leaving graves sunken, and overgrown with vines and small trees.

In 2011 Mt. Olive Cemetery will be added to the National Civil War Trails Registry.  In an effort to have the cemetery in pristine condition, the Mt. Olive Historical Preservation Society, along with other organizations, churches, and businesses in the area, will partner together to beautify this sacred ground.

Celebrate the Child has been a cherished Ohio County event for 17 years - a number of young people have experienced every one! Over 3,000 people attend annually and about 50 businesses, churches, community groups, and a large group of youth volunteers make it happen.

The event has a special focus on the 40 Developmental Assets that help young people to grow up to be healthy, caring and responsible. That’s why there’s more than fun behind the 2010 theme ”Assets Rock” - it also reinforces the importance of building assets for every young person.

Celebrate the Child is a project of Ohio County Together We Care, a vital coalition of youth, parents, educators, business people, religious leaders, and others working to build assets to prevent drug abuse and other problems affecting young people. This special day is made possible through the generous sponsorship of Ohio County Schools, Ohio County Hospital, McDonald’s, and many other local groups and businesses.

Begins on April 17th and ends on April 24th.  Food will be delivered to the Hartsville Soup Kitchen on April 24th.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is linking arms and extending helping hands to the Child Abuse Prevention Association in Beaufort (CAPA).  The Angel Walk was inspired, in part, by the late Alfred G. Anderson, a life long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  Andy,as he was lovingly known, was an “angel” to many children in our community.  The Church and “Andy” have been involved with Capa since it began on March 28th twenty five years ago and is near and dear to the hearts of many Latter Day Saints.  Our local community had 11 children under the age of four die last year.  This is up significantly from previous years.  At least 6 of these deaths should have never happened and were preventable.  Capa’s mission is to protect children by “equipping parents, children and their caregivers with necessary skills, knowledge and values” . We believe their mission is essential to protecting the family unit in our community.  The goal of the Angel Walk is to raise funds necessary to ensure that services are available to prevent child abuse and neglect.  CAPA exists to break the destructive cycle of child abuse and neglect.  Therefore, we walk together and support the CAPA Shelter with a Food Drive.

The Louisville Kentucky Stake Day of Service had a single stake project accompanied by individual unit projects.  The stake project was the second annual event entitled THE Louisville Emergency Preparedness Fair.  Due to local Derby activities conflicting with available dates, this event was held on February 27, 2010.

This year’s event saw an increase in visitors and partners, along with a larger venue.  The local Salvation Army command graciously allowed us to use their facility which is located in an old high school.  We obtained proclamations from the Governor once again, along with a proclamation from the Louisville mayor.  Mayor Jerry Abramson also attended the kickoff function held an 30 minutes before the start time, and was accompanied by a couple council members.  Local television crews were on hand for video coverage while local radio personalities plugged the event that morning and in the days that preceded.

The premise of the event was to highlight not only the necessity of provident living, but to educate residents that have no background in food storage, emergency procedures, and local resources for after-care.  With three recent FEMA declared disasters in the last couple years, residents are beginning to develop a forward-thinking plan for their families.  This year we had local companies volunteer their time and staff to educate the public, local government agencies answering questions and providing material to visitors, the local Red Cross assisted with classes and brought along their bloodmobile, and for the kids we had an inflatable house which served as a fun escape, but also taught fire safety.

In conjunction with the fair, we held a food drive for The Louisville Salvation Army.  Those attending the fair were asked to bring donations of canned or boxed goods.  The end result was a donation to the Salvation Army of over 3000 individual cans and boxes of food.
=========================

The individual wards and branches in our stake held their Day of Service projects on April 24, 2010.  Many of the units held multiple projects on the same day, splitting their unit into various teams to accomplish their goals.  One unit’s activity accounted for over 600 man-hours of service to their community partner.  The stake total for the combined Day of Service activities was 1438.5 man-hours (NOTE: this is a correction from our filed stake summary).

Running From Hunger (5K Race and Food Drive)
A total of 8828 cans of food were donated to local area food banks in Gwinnett, Rockdale, and Newton Counties

Citizens from across Gwinnett, Rockdale and Newton Counties joined the Lilburn Stake in a 5K Race and Food drive. Each unit of the Lilburn, Georgia Stake spent several weeks prior to the event to collect cans for the 6-8 food banks. These cans of food were brought to the day of the race and combined with the cans that were donated by the public and race participants. Each runner was asked to donate 10 cans each. The race took place on April 24th despite major thunderstorms and inclement weather. Although the weather may have limited the number of runners (267), we were very pleased to see the amount of food that had been collected by each of the individual units. When combined with the food collected on the day of the race it totaled 8828 cans or 4.5 tons of food. Response from the organizations served was overwhelming. The food supply in many of these food banks was at a 14 year low and this influx of food could not have come at a better time for them. The stake has been supporting these food banks for the past several years, and this only served to strengthen our relationships.

Huntsville Area Day of Service 2010

The Huntsville Alabama Stake, consisting of thirteen wards (congregations) covering the north-central portion of Alabama and Lincoln County in Tennessee, linked arms with neighboring communities to provide disaster preparedness, tornado cleanup, food and blood drives, community service and networking employment opportunities.  Six large-scale community projects unified five hundred seventy six (576) volunteers dedicating two thousand six hundred sixty five (2,665) service hours that comprised the Huntsville area Day of Service 2010.

Eight Huntsville/Madison area wards combined to present the 2nd Annual Huntsville Disaster & Family Preparedness Fair which offered a blood drive, 31 seminars and numerous exhibits helping our neighbors prepare for the unexpected…right here at home!  Paige Soehren, from the Huntsville-Madison County Emergency Management Agency commented that “An Emergency Preparedness Fair is very beneficial for the community because it offers another venue by which the disaster response public services can engage their clients: the public! Emergency service personnel enjoy interacting with the public in non-emergency situations and assisting the community to be more prepared (for) large scale disasters. No matter what the emergency, every member of our community will one day experience being a first responder.  This Emergency Preparedness Fair is vital to saving life and protecting property in our community because at this event, through training and education, we bridge the gap between when an emergency happens and when emergency responders arrive on the scene.”
Local weather and news TV personalities Brad Huffines and Liz Hurley were keynote speakers.

Read about it in the Huntsville Times here.

On the heels of this fair, and a week after the Guntersville Ward (which lies in the Northeastern portion of Alabama and covers nine hundred square miles) sponsored a Lifesouth blood drive, the Albertville portion of their ward was hit by several EF2-EF4 tornadoes.  Mormon Helping Hands and friends worked with civic and religious leaders to join together and clean up debris from the devastation.  Gwen Beck , Public Affairs Specialist and wife to Bishop Lynn Beck, wrote “We know that miracles happen!  I listened to my husband pray for them and I watched them unfold!  Answers to that prayer among others are what staved off the storms from this area until today,”  thus allowing congregations to mobilize and provide services to those who needed the most help. The cleanup will continue for months to come.

Cullman and Decatur Wards, along with the Fayetteville, Tennessee Ward organized a “Give your Soles to Haiti” shoe drive; construction of an outdoor amphitheater at a local park; stairs built for an elderly couple’s home; board games collected and hand-sewn pillows made for a women’s shelter; painting of outdoor equipment at an elementary school; and food drives for local food banks and crisis shelters totaling thousands of dollars worth of non-perishable food items.

To better prepare those seeking resume and interviewing skills, weekly luncheon Fast Start Employment meetings began.  These meetings facilitate a targeted approach to career and networking opportunities.

Barry Zitting, member of the High Council, summarized it well, “I saw the Lord’s hand blessing many individuals because of the efforts of the great people in the Huntsville community who partnered with us.  There was a strong feeling of good will that all felt who were involved.”

Day of Service: Saturday, April 24, 2010

Using a balanced approach to community service, Day of Service volunteers worked with government, faith-based and nonprofit agencies to expand the capacity to serve organizations and schools adversely affected by the economic recession. By linking arms in service to Rebuild & Renew Brevard, we were able to refresh and refurbish buildings and properties throughout the county.

Projects included fencing repair and new construction, interior and exterior painting, major yard or gardening cleanup, minor and major landscaping, palm tree stump removals, outdoor shed and roofing repairs or replacement, playground revamping and construction, ceiling-wall-baseboard repairs, major interior renovations for the YMCA in Titusville, and planting a butterfly garden and trees along a future bike path. Five public schools and one private school were served by volunteers. Three green projects benefited three communities.

Over 2,600 man-hours were donated on the Day of Service by local volunteers. Pre and post event hours bring the total up well over 3,100 service hours. Using an average wage calculation of $17 per hour, over $51,000 in labor costs were saved so organizations can use their funding to directly help individuals and families in need.

From those figures, Day of Service volunteers
~ Saved Brevard County Schools over $3,600 or 2 months of labor by one individual in grounds keeping maintenance. Those funds can be used to purchase badly needed supplies for schools while allowing maintenance personnel to focus on more important repairs.
~ The labor donated to clear and fence in Nemo Community Garden will help expedite the process for twenty families eager to cultivate their 5-foot-by-20-foot plot so they can become more self-sufficient.
~ 17 units of blood were collected in two and a half hours by the Red Cross at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Ellsworth Ward in Deer Park.
~ Clearing and beautifying parks and pathways for two communities saved the city coffers over $9,000 in labor costs.
~ Over $8,100 in reconstruction and refurbishing labor for the YMCA Tennis Center in Titusville was a tremendous boost to their budget when it came to replacing fences and gutting out locker rooms and offices in need of significant repair. The center is located as a satellite facility a ways from the main building. Nestled back in a housing development the property improvements becomes a show piece for the neighborhood.
~ Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who work at Deseret Ranches, extended helping hands in a Habitat For Humanity Brush of Kindness for two homeowners that also live in rural areas of Osceola County.

Stuart Stake Day of Service Follow up:
Wellington Ward Day of Service Project
In collaboration with CROS (Christians Reaching Out to Society) Ministries, the Wellington Ward will coordinate a gleaning effort with local farmers in Belle Glade on Saturday, April 25th.  The Wellington Ward has committed to have between 100 and 150 volunteers comprising of its members, youth from the Jupiter ward, community leaders and volunteers from the surrounding community.  Volunteers will manually pick corn from selected rows of ready crop donated by local farmers.  In many cases these rows of corn were previously harvested by mechanical harvesting methods but leave behind many ears of fresh corn that can only be harvested manually. The corn will be picked, boxed and loaded on a truck for immediate delivery to local soup kitchens in the surrounding community.  Corn picked on Saturday morning, in many instances will be part of a freshly served meal that very evening.  The exact location of the gleaning project will not be known until only days before as it depends on crop conditions and availability.  Youth from the Wellington Ward and Jupiter Ward will arrive early to the fields and mark rows and work areas to better organize 150 helping hands arriving and ready to work.  This projects lends itself well to volunteers of all ages from small children to the elderly working at whatever pace they can work.
Jupiter Ward Volunteers 202 Hours Painting for Day of Service
Forty members of the Jupiter Ward of the Stuart Florida stake, under the direction of Brother Mike Phillips, volunteered their time in local projects on April 25, 2010, the second annual Day of Service of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Thirty-eight members worked with Joanna Aiken of SWA (Solid Waste Authority) of Palm Beach County and twenty-one students from the Benjamin High School Honor Society.
The Day of Service coincided with the Great American Cleanup, for which the SWA accepted applications of less fortunate home owners to have their homes repainted.  Lois King, an 89-yr old had a large home in central Jupiter which was moldy and covered with vines. Her yard was overgrown with vegetation and there was a great deal of debris around the home. Hazards included an animal carcass, a snake, a beehive, broken glass, rusty furniture, and open cans of gasoline.
Professionals gave their time to pressure clean, landscape, and paint the home. Teens, youth leaders, missionaries, and some Hispanic members cleared enough plant growth to make a pile four feet high by six feet wide by 25 feet long. Members and students labored to change the jagged stucco surface from faded grey to southwest orange. Lois helped everyone sort through her things and take out a pile of trash as big as a car.
The home is on a corner of a busy road, and it looks much better and is a safer place. Several neighbors expressed their gratitude, and SWA was grateful, since they’d had a hard time finding a group to paint such a tall home. Volunteers enjoyed themselves, eating donuts, painting each other, posing for pictures with machetes and paintbrushes, holding ladders, and telling stories.
Our Day of Service included three other projects. Charlene Harreveld assisted six people in making 50 greeting cards for the Tampa Ronald McDonald house. Seven Jupiter ward members braved the rain with the Friends of Jupiter Heights to pick up trash for two hours on April 17 in south Jupiter.  And five members helped frame a new Jupiter home for Habitat for Humanity for about five hours on April 24.
Stuart Ward Day of Service Project:
On Saturday, April 24th, members of the local Stuart Florida Ward (congregation) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) provided a “Day of Service” to a Habitat for Humanity project in Indiantown, Florida. The Stuart Ward members provided helping hands to install framing, sheet rock and painting on a new-build home in the Booker Park subdivision of Indiantown.
The members of the ward collected a truck load of clothing for the 4C’s, an organization that provides clothing for children from infant to high school. The women of the Stuart Ward worked for hours sorting the clothes into sizes and bagging them for delivery.
Vero Beach Day of Service Project:
The small community of Indian River County is situated at the northernmost border of the tropics on the East coast of Florida. The Vero Beach Ward is the center of worship for all of the Saints of the county. For the second year, the membership of the ward has reached out to other faiths and members of the community at large to join in serving those in need on the Day of Service just as other congregations have done throughout the Southeast United States.

This year, service was rendered at 12 different sites and projects. The Day of Service sponsored a Blood Donation drive, worked at a community pantry, stuffed envelopes to raise cancer awareness, assisted with beautification efforts at four locations, helped to restore a historic church building now dedicated to the preservation of African American history in the area, assisted with land reclamation at the nation’s first wildlife refuge, provided skilled labor at a foster care transitional home and provided food support for over 160 volunteers from various faiths, cultures and backgrounds of the community of Indian River County. Even the mayor of Vero Beach put on shorts, a t-shirt and plenty of sunscreen to work shoulder to shoulder with private citizens digging an irrigation pipe ditch at Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge.

The refuge was founded by Teddy Roosevelt to preserve the only Brown Pelican rookery known to exist at the time. Over the years, the tiny refuge has expanded to reclaim and restore land around the rookery that had been developed to produce citrus. Many native plants require nurturing before being placed back into the wild. Day of Service volunteers raised a shade house for these seedlings and dug a trench well over 200 feet to supply the sprinklers for the shade house. They also removed debris from a hurricane damaged storage shed near the shade house site to prepare it for use as a gardener’s supply shed after roof repairs are completed.

Crews of volunteers were dispatched to the Women’s Shelter, the Homeless Family Center, the Samaritan Center to improve the outside grounds by removing old playground equipment, weeding and mulching plant beds and play areas and installing pavers to a walkway between buildings. Each of these organizations provides services to people under significant life stress. While mulching a flower bed might not seem like a significant community need, it in fact can create an environment for people in need of a sense of safety, security and stability in order to regain their independence.

Part of being self sufficient is being able to feed one’s family. The Harvest Food and Outreach Center focuses on this essential ability. The Day of Service spent time and gave hours for the second year here. However, efforts to serve this tremendous organization began before the actual Day of Service dawned. A food drive was organized in advance and in addition to the significant outpouring of goods from individual volunteers on the morning of the event, dozens of creates of a variety foods was provided from the Stuart Florida Stake’s portion of the Bishop’s storehouse. Once everything was delivered to the Harvest’s warehouse, volunteers set to the Herculean task of sorting multiple shipping palates of food destined to not only feed the bellies of the needy, but to instill a sense of independence that will bring them out of the oppression of poverty.

The Macedonia Church was established in 1908 to serve the spiritual needs of the African American community of county and is older than the county itself. It has since been declared a historic place and currently functions as a small museum dedicated to the remembrance of the struggle for equality. The 102-year-old wooden structure was in significant need of repair to its facade as a result of rot and aging paint. A swarm of workers from ages 7 to 60 descended on the building to lovingly and respectfully perform a little cosmetic surgery that will slow its decay and preserve our history so that we may prevent its repetition. Workers reported receiving multiple honks from passing cars that were received as votes of support and gratitude for the effort.

Being aware that a positive impact was being made in the community made the hot sun a little cooler, muscles a bit stronger and hearts swell even larger. Boundaries based on denomination disappeared from amongst the volunteers. Whether one was from Holy Cross Catholic Church, Unity, the Community Church, the Unitarian Universalist congregation or the Vero Beach Ward of the LDS Church it mattered not. As one volunteer stated when asked how the Day of Service had changed her, it has inspired her to come back.
Belle Glade Ward Project:
This ward cleaned and painted The Light House Café,  which is an organization that feeds the poor. They had 18 helping hands, and they put in all together 72 hours.
Ft. Pierce Ward Project:

A great day of service was had by the combined efforts of the Okatie Branch and Ridgeland Ward.  Even though it rained all day and we were drenched our spirits were not dampened.  Most everyone worked in the Butterfly area of the Blue Heron Nature Trail pulling weeds, cutting and trimming underbrush, raking and removing old mulch.  The Cub Scouts cleaned the bird feeders along the trail and will resupply the seed this week.  Another group of adults headed to a nonmember’s home, who was recently widowed, where they raked and cleaned her yard.  She was so appreciative.  The Primary and their leaders headed to our local Nursing Home where they spread good cheer throughout by singing and visiting with the patients.  They also placed several new bird feeders and refilled existing feeders so the patients could enjoy watching the birds.  The Primary will also make a delivery next week to our local Senior Citizens Center with all the food they have so diligently collected.  This center has an open pantry for our local senior citizens to get the necessary items they need.  They were so appreciative of the Primary donating to their organization.

KINGSLAND WARD
Approximately one hundred (100) members of the LDS church and Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church were joined by fifteen (15) community members to help lay brick at the historic train depot in Kingsland.

9,000 square feet of brick pavers were laid and the Mayor of Kingsland worked right alongside the large work crew. Men, women, youth and children were involved and the spirit and unity of the group was something to behold.

By 8 a.m., when the volunteers were already hard at work, and they picked up their pace around 11 a.m. when rain clouds appeared on the horizon. In the end over 35,000 pavers were positioned as a beautiful appendage to the Historic Train Depot.

The work and efforts probably saved the City thousands of dollars and the Bishop of the Ward, Howard Sepp, was amazed at the turnout, as well as the spirit and attitude of the volunteers.  He said, “I was blown away by how hard the ladies worked in carrying pavers to those working in the sand to lay them. The city workers did a magnificent job of preparing the area and ore-positioning the brick pavers.”

They could run and explore and the labor was perfectly suited to their abilities. It was the first time many of the volunteers had been to the Park and now plan to visit again this summer and even have family reunions there. It was truly a community building project.

One yard work project warranted the comments “we literally couldn’t see the house when we arrived but after we finished, the house was visible and the owners commented they hadn’t seen it look that good in ages and they decided they liked to be able to see it again”

The family that painted the front porch for an elderly lady enjoyed the family experience and learned that it’s not always in the paint that makes a good job, but often in the scrapping and preparation.

One recipient of service is enjoying her new kitchen floor even though the termites weren’t too happy with us.  Many others completed yard work with great success and some are still coordinating because of weather issues.

The Suwanee Ward partnered with the North Gwinnett Cooperative in Buford to help address a critical need in food and household items for families in our community seeking aid. An average of 40 new families seek aid from the Cooperative each month. With the attention given to worldwide disasters such as the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, donations had dropped as need had increased. When we contacted the Cooperative about collecting donations and asked what was needed, the answer was “Everything.”
Our focus was on individual- and family-based collection efforts in neighborhoods and among organizations they already participated in i.e. school groups, sports teams, community clubs, etc. Each family or group determined the best strategy for advertising and then collecting the goods throughout a four-week period. The donations collected were either taken directly to the Cooperative or dropped off at the Sugar Hill Stake Center on the Day of Service. They were then transported to the Cooperative during drop-off hours.
This strategy not only allowed families and individuals to work together to formulate a plan that would best fit their schedules and allow them to leverage their own personal connections. In addition, many families used the service opportunity to not only engage their children in the planning, advertising and collection, but also to help deliver the items to the Cooperative so they could see for themselves where the donations would be used.
In all, the Suwanee Ward collected more than 1,500 items including a variety of nonperishable food as well as donations household cleaning products to help re-stock the shelves.  Several family members commented on what a positive experience it was for their children and those they received donations from.

April 17, 2010: The first, was by partnering with the Lumpkin County Habitat for Humanity, the Lumpkin County DFCS, Home Depot and many individuals from the ward.

DFCS identified a particular family consisting of a widowed mother with a 15 year-old physically challenged son, and an 18 month-old granddaughter.  The need was for an access ramp for the wheelchair-bound son.

The money for this assignment came from individuals in the Dahlonega Ward.  We asked for funds in PEC meeting, in Priesthood opening exercises and even from the pulpit.  We did not go through the Fast Offerings.  Home Depot offered a discount on the materials.  The expertise for the construction came from Habitat for Humanity, and specifically, Bob Pullen, President of Lumpkin County Habitat for Humanity.  Approximately 119 hours were invested in today’s work.

April 23, 2010: The Relief Society sisters of the Dahlonega Ward partnered with the Dawson County Senior Center in Dawsonville to provide and serve ice cream for the senior citizens. Funds were solicited by the Relief Society via email and by way of a folder passed around in Relief Society.  Again, we did not use Fast Offerings.
There were 46 seniors and four employees served as well as most of the sisters.

April 24, 2010: The Young Men and Young Women under the direction of the Young Men’s President and Brother Parker from the Bishopric conducted a food drive to benefit the Lumpkin County food pantry.  This required a partnership with Wal-Mart who gave us permission to set up chairs and posters in the entries of the Dahlonega Wal-Mart.  Initial reports were that J and J Market in Dahlonega was also to participate.  But we were told that we were not welcome to solicit food items there.  This was a disappointment as the community literally cleaned out Wal-Mart’s shelves of the items asked for.  It would seem that this partnership would be wise even if just for the sale of the goods.

The youth surveyed The Helping Place, the Lumpkin County food pantry to determine their needs.  The youth then compiled a half-page flyer indicating those needs and also containing a list of items.  They were as follows: Spaghetti sauce, 16 oz. jars of jelly, plain oatmeal, grits or cornmeal, self-rising flour, vegetable oil, and canned chicken.  As the customers came into the store the youth greeted them and offered a flyer.  Many, many customers thanked them and then added an item or two to their shopping carts.  Then the customers left those items with the youth upon leaving the store.

The first night’s load of food more than filled the capacity of one leader’s SUV.  Adjustments were immediately made to use trucks to haul the food.  The final contribution to the food pantry was just less than 3000 pounds.
Our Young Men and Young Women’s partnership with the Lumpkin County food bank and Wal-Mart proved to be a success and one that we will certainly use again.

“Let’s Can Hunger” – Food Drive
The Sugar Hill ward Day of Service was a community food drive to provide non-perishable food items to a local food bank.

All ward members (High Priests, Elders Quorum, Relief Society, Young Men, Young Women, Primary, Boy Scouts & Cub Scouts) were invited to participate. We partnered with neighbors, business associates, sports teams and another scout troop (Troop 1534 - affiliated with the Buford Church of Christ).

Our main focus was neighbor contacting, yet we also encouraged place-of-business, and sports team efforts. Participants had the option of approaches such as “scouting for food,” “3 doors to the left/3 doors to the right,” etc. They were provided with printed material to promote the event, and “hand-outs” to circulate to friends and neighbors. One youth activity night was dedicated to the youth passing out leaflets throughout a large subdivision inviting them to join in our effort.

The cause was well received by the community in general. All of the food that was collected was delivered on Monday, April 26, 2010, to North Gwinnett Cooperative’s food bank. They were very appreciative to receive the large contribution. Participants in the delivery effort were given a tour of the Coop’s facility.

The annual Greater Camden Clean-Up is a city sponsored event, with a purpose of cleaning up the city and streets. It just happens to fall on April 24th se we decided it would be great Day of Service event. There are several different groups from churches and local businesses that participate every year.  Because of the rain and other factors, there was not the usual turn out, but our branch collected over 3000 lbs of trash from streets and around homes, the total amount of trash picked up was over 4500 lbs.  Our group was very active and everyone had fun even though we did get drenched a few times.  Obviously this is somethng we will participate in again.  This type of service brings the community together and has a far greater effect on our little town that simply cleaning the streets.  Service knits us together in brotherhood.

We had 26 members work at the Clark County Humane Society.  We also had 3 Sisters that provided babysitting at the church for children under 8 whose families were serving.  Two workers of the Humane Society, one paid and the other a volunteer, coordinated our work.  We spent about 3 hours mowing, weedeating, cleaning cages, animal houses, the building in general, walking each of the dogs, and giving love and attention to all of the animals.  Some of the brethren with professional skills repaired walls, baseboards, floors, etc.

The Humane Society workers said they had never had such a large group come at one time.  They repeated over and over how grateful they were for our work.  Everyone that came had something meaningful to contribute.
We talked amongst ourselves and then told the workers that we would like to come there again sometime.  They said they would be delighted with that.

120+ members of all ages met at the warehouse located in Rosewood and spent several hours working for MERCI-painting, clearing trails, cleaning up garbage on the site, sewing shorts and blouses for needy children and putting together Hygiene kits to send to Haiti and others in need.
Following the devastation of Hurricane Floyd in 1999, NCC made a commitment to help people in need living in Eastern North Carolina. They currently have two warehouses both in North Carolina and Louisiana.
Ann Huffman, volunteer coordinator for the NC center and Bob Pavone, interim warehouse manager were on hand to direct members to the various tasks. Upon interviewing Huffman we learned that the North Carolina MERCI mission center sends 4 large containers-about the size of a Railroad car-per year full of supplies to countries such as Liberia and Afghanistan. These include items such as Medications, Educational items, agricultural tools and seeds as well as clothes and hygiene kits. When asked about the agricultural materials Huffman told us that one of the goals of MERCI is to help poverty stricken countries become more self-sufficient.
Mr. Pavone was able to give some of us a tour of the facility. There were pallets of large buckets packed with cleaning supplies ready to send to flood victims. Hundreds were sent to Katrina victims after the devastating hurricane hit in 2005. The warehouse also has a special room where hand crafted infant caskets are stored. They are available to local hospitals and plans are in the works to send several overseas. The back of the facility is being transformed into a re-treat area with cabins and an amphitheater. The center is able to accomplish all of this through private donations and grants.
The Goldsboro congregations had a successful day accomplishing many tasks including filling 64 cases of Hygiene kits for Haiti. Each case contained 13 kits for a total of 832. Through this service a partnership was formed and plans are already in the works to go back.

She helped organized and made sure we had a great lunch. There were many others but too many to mention.

April 24, 2010 dawned with thunderstorm warnings and a tornado watch for West Baton Rouge Parish, but it wasn’t enough to detour 200 volunteers from showing up to keep their promise of revitalizing Port Allen Elementary and Port Allen Middle School. When asked if the project would proceed in spite of the weather, Pat Richardson, Chairman of the Day of Service committee said, “If the Lord can part the Red Sea, I don’t think a few storm clouds will be a problem.” As the group gathered he announced, “There’s plenty to do inside until it clears up outside.” Ten minutes after the opening hymn and prayer, the rain stopped. Because there never seems to be enough money in a small town school budget for upkeep, Ms. Kauffman, Principal of the elementary school has only one custodian, herself, and her staff to do almost all the maintenance. Often, they give up their Saturdays to accomplish everything. There were tears in her eyes when she saw the number of volunteers. The principal of Port Allen Middle,  Dr. Jonathon Szymanski, was grinning from ear to ear. The volunteers could see how much their help was appreciated and they rose to the occasion. That day in the elementary school auditorium, the walls and bookshelves were painted, damaged ceiling tiles replaced, floor markings re-taped, the stage repainted and the curtain repaired, as well as all outside doors painted and gutters cleaned. At the middle school, Dr. Szymanski supervised the painting of the school colors down specified hallways. Both schools received a landscaping makeover. Nearing the end of the project, someone commented, considering how the day started out, it was amazing that the weather cleared up and so much was able to be accomplished. Gayle Smith, an LDS member of Baton Rouge First Ward summed it up nicely. “It’s called faith…but you’ve got to show up.”

The Edgewood Ward worked on two of the six houses that H4H has under construction in Columbus, painting the primer coat on the interior walls and ceilings. The group was willing but unable to paint anymore because it was too humid for the first coat to dry. They also worked on landscaping at another house, along with two other groups and several individuals to completely prepare the landscape for move-in. They cleared debris, leveled the ground, cleared the fences and laid all of the sod. Except for a few interior touch-up items, the house was ready for move-in which was supposed to take place the following week.

We enjoyed a wonderful day at Habitat for Humanity of Russell County on Saturday, April 24 for the Day of Service.  We worked on two houses in the Sandfort Hills Subdivision.  Our team of 25 volunteers (21 church members, plus three future Habitat homeowners and one site manager) primed and painted an entire house.  The rainy weather changed the plans considerably, as the men were planning on heavy labor moving soil, rocks, etc. but they were still able to clear the second home of all extra sheet rock and materials and prime all the trim for the doorways, window frames, etc.  Our volunteers included our bishop, President Eiland and his family, and many of our ward volunteers.  We even had a few volunteers from the Rivercrest Ward to join us!  Our Relief Society President, Sister Culpepper prepared sack lunches for all the volunteers and delivered them to the site, along with the assistance of one of our other RS sisters.  We worked from 8:00 AM - 1:30 PM.  It was a great day!  And we were asked to join Habitat in the Fall to help build a home from the ground up - we were very excited and are looking forward to the challenge and hope our members will join in!  Sister Lyn Gonzalez

A day of services and resources for over 200 homeless families in Seminole County.  shelter, employment, medical exams, children’s immunizations, medical testing, rent & electric assistance, food stamps, legal help, birth certificates, Florida ID’s and many other services were offered. Free haircuts, family pictures, kid’s crafts, face painting, child care, and lunch were all part of the day. A Scout completed his Eagle project by collecting 300 bags of food and distributing them to the families. Churches worked together collecting clothes that were sorted and organized. Our missionaries helped families through the event along with many other caring and helpful volunteers.  Several hundred books were donated to be given to the children. This was a day to help “people who were poor as to the things of the world; and also they were poor in heart.” Our intent was to provide hope and help to many of our neighbors in need, giving members and non-members an opportunity to work together in the service of others. http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/11949830_Y4Ltb#846515031_ANrFR link to pictures online and itsaboutfamilies.blogspot.com is the link for our blog. imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage

Albertville EF3 Tornado Cleanup

One of 6 tornados hitting northern Alabama during the night Saturday/Sunday (April 24/25), an EF3 no less, hit the community of Albertville - hard!  Sirens were going off until the wee hours of Sunday morning as another one of the 6 tornados went over Sardis City, nine miles from the one that devastated Main Street Albertville.
By Monday(April 26) at 2:00 p.m., twenty-eight LDS members came from Sardis City, Boaz and Guntersville, and conducted a cleanup of the Memory Hill Cemetery, which suffered a great deal of wind and tree damage. You could see the tornado path along Main Street from the Cemetery.  At the Cemetery and all over Albertville, huge old trees were uprooted, and pine trees were cut off like match sticks, and thrown everywhere.  At the cemetery, the outer boundary of the tornado path, trees were blocking roads, lying over headstones, and had severed power lines.  And, a burial was scheduled there for 3:00 p.m.
“There was no electricity in the city; no land line phones, no internet, or e-mail, capabilities at our home, and blocked roads everywhere,” said Gwen Beck, wife of Guntersville Ward Bishop Lynn Beck, whose home is in Sardis City.  The following weekend (May 1),  81 LDS members from all over the Huntsville Alabama Stake joined together as “Mormon Helping Hands” in a post-tornado cleanup of the areas just to the east of Main Street Albertville, following the path of the tornado . The downtown area still had roads blocked and no traffic was allowed.  “Those trees are heavy, chain saws are to be respected, and skid loaders are much appreciated!,” added Beck.  The cleanup will continue for months to come.
