We also had two volunteers distributing a new free book to all the families that came through the sale. While we were slightly overstaffed, everyone’s help was appreciated and the volunteers enjoyed working with one another and with Read Seed staff and board members.

The stairs in the back of the school (on the hill to the east of the building) that provide access to the lower field were in serious disrepair. We replaced the existing dilapidated stairs with new timbers.  This involved replacing all of the support timbers and replacing the hand rail and adding a lower rail to stabilize the rail system and also to accommodate younger people.

We also replaced the basketball standard in the south parking lot with a new system that is very heavy duty and has height adjustment and a removable hoop.  It was placed in the same location as the one removed.

We also repaired a split log fence located in front of the school (West side bordering Roxboro road).  It looked like a careless driver had hit the fence and damaged the wooden rails and at least one of the brick columns.

We were able to exceed the Red Cross goal of 70 units with a total donation of 71 units.
Red Cross provided the canteen snacks, equipment, vans and of course 10 RN’s from 9 - 5.  I was especially pleased we exceeded the goal to cover the thousands of dollars that it must surely cost Red Cross to put on a drive.  I am so grateful for all of the people who made the sacrifice of time (and body) to donate.  There are people in our community who will live longer because of these donations.

Total people involved: 125
Total volunteer hours: 375

Saints young and old from the Durham Stake had fun working on gardening and maintenance service projects at Bennett Place, site of the largest surrender of the Civil War, on Saturday, April 24th.  Our Leader from the Bennett Place Staff, Jeremiah Degennaro had a full list of projects to keep all 125 volunteers busy for our 3 hour work session.

We kicked off the morning at 9:00 AM in the Kitchen Garden area by reading the Day of Service Proclamation from Durham Mayor Bill Bell and a prayer offered by Bishop Meyer of Durham First Ward.  Jeremiah provided instructions for preparing the new garden beds, weeding the existing herb garden, husking and planting seeds.  All work was done the traditional way with rakes, shovels, hoes, picks, and even weeding done by hand.  Our volunteers transformed a grassy area and herb garden full of weeds into a well manicured, neat garden which was a beautiful site to behold at the end of our work day.

A second group walked across a large field to the wooded area of the property where they helped move rocks, pile brush, stack logs, and dig dirt in the woods to use as top soil for the Kitchen Garden.  The dirt was moved from the dig site across the field to the garden by wheelbarrow.  On the return the trip back, there were always a couple kids getting a ride in the wheelbarrow, which was quite a thrill for them!

A third group raked the picnic area and then followed Jeremiah into the woods to rake pine needles and leaves off the network of nature trails in the woods.  The youth also worked as a team to help line the trails with logs found on the forest floor.  The raking team ventured into the woods single file at first like a very long train, then split up into smaller work groups to cover the various trails.

At the end of the morning a sub-group from the Kitchen Garden team was recruited to help dig out the drainage ditch at the far end of the property past the picnic area.  A few folks also picked up gum-balls out of the grass in front of the Visitor Center.

Kimberly Isley’s team dropped off apples, oranges, Nature Valley bars and water, which made a big hit with the hungry, hard-working volunteers who gathered around the picnic tables at the end of our work day for much needed nourishment, hydration, and fellowship.

Eden Meyer was our official people-counter and she counted a total of 125 volunteers from the Durham Stake!  Everyone worked solid for 3 hours from 9 AM to Noon.  This means we contributed 375 person-hours to the beautification of Bennett Place on our Day of Service.

Everyone worked hard and had loads of fun at the same time.  A truly enjoyable experience was had by all who participated! Jeremiah was thrilled with how much our group accomplished and said he would like us to come back To Bennett Place next year if we do another Day of Service project in 2011!

Wright School

Location and Time:

Wright School
3132 N Roxboro St.
Durham, NC 27704

8:30 AM - 4:30 PM

Activity/responsibility:

Wright School is a unique child mental health treatment program. It provides best practice, cost-effective residential mental health treatment to North Carolina’s children, ages six to twelve, with serious emotional and behavioral disorders. It also supports each child’s family and community in building the capacity to meet children’s special needs in their home, school and local community.

This project is one that will make a difference in the lives of many youth, but especially will make a great impact on a family with ties to this school.  The project is creating a memorial garden for the Wright School in Durham, North Carolina.  One of the students lost a sister to cancer while attending this school.  Donations were given to this school from family and friends of the young girl who died.  The family wanted to have a place created in her honor for peace, solitude, and tranquility for any student or visitor who visits the school campus.

We will create this garden and to improve the surrounding environment for the students, school and for the family. The days events will include taking out the bushes and to plant new shrubs.  Lattice fences will be placed in front of the air conditioning units to hide from the memorial garden.  A lattice fence will be installed next to the patio to create an enclosed space.  These lattice fences will be painted white.  We will install two to three benches for sitting.  In the middle of the benches, we will place a water fountain. Along the pathway from the entrance of the school, we will replant flowers and install flower beds.  Under the bushes, we will add new mulch and additional flowers which will lead directly to the memorial garden.  Across the way from the memorial garden there is a playground and grassy area for the students to play.  We will build a fence and stain it which will separate this playground from a big ravine where sports ball always roll down when playing games.
