120+ members of all ages met at the warehouse located in Rosewood and spent several hours working for MERCI-painting, clearing trails, cleaning up garbage on the site, sewing shorts and blouses for needy children and putting together Hygiene kits to send to Haiti and others in need.
Following the devastation of Hurricane Floyd in 1999, NCC made a commitment to help people in need living in Eastern North Carolina. They currently have two warehouses both in North Carolina and Louisiana.
Ann Huffman, volunteer coordinator for the NC center and Bob Pavone, interim warehouse manager were on hand to direct members to the various tasks. Upon interviewing Huffman we learned that the North Carolina MERCI mission center sends 4 large containers-about the size of a Railroad car-per year full of supplies to countries such as Liberia and Afghanistan. These include items such as Medications, Educational items, agricultural tools and seeds as well as clothes and hygiene kits. When asked about the agricultural materials Huffman told us that one of the goals of MERCI is to help poverty stricken countries become more self-sufficient.
Mr. Pavone was able to give some of us a tour of the facility. There were pallets of large buckets packed with cleaning supplies ready to send to flood victims. Hundreds were sent to Katrina victims after the devastating hurricane hit in 2005. The warehouse also has a special room where hand crafted infant caskets are stored. They are available to local hospitals and plans are in the works to send several overseas. The back of the facility is being transformed into a re-treat area with cabins and an amphitheater. The center is able to accomplish all of this through private donations and grants.
The Goldsboro congregations had a successful day accomplishing many tasks including filling 64 cases of Hygiene kits for Haiti. Each case contained 13 kits for a total of 832. Through this service a partnership was formed and plans are already in the works to go back.
